The Future of Flat Roofing
The roofing industry is shifting towards what is known as “single ply” for flat roofs.
Hot tar has been the flat roofing industry standard for more than 75 years. Although this technology certainly has worked well, like the black and white TV, it has had its time… and we are ready for color! The main problems with hot tar are the following: It is limited to 15 years of life. Installation is incredibly dangerous (I have personally seen many roofers with unsightly burns and scars as a result). The equipment required (such as tar kettles, propane tanks and pipes, etc), is not good for the environment or anyone inhaling the fumes. Single ply gets rid of all of these problems.
Single ply roofing will be its competent replacement! It is far superior to conventional hot tar roofing. It is like a big thick rubber sheet covering your roof lasting 2-3 times as long as traditional roofing, (40 or more years). It is highly reflective, reducing energy costs significantly. It withstands water pooling and chemicals that would ruin conventional roofs; and it’s safe to install!
Single ply (TPO or PVC it’s called) roofing is basically large rolls of different combinations of rubber, pvc., plastic, and other chemicals that are hard to pronounce. The material is “heat welded”, one sheet to another, to create a watertight system. The installers use what appears to be a small hair dryer to weld the material together, and a machine that resembles a lawn edger for larger projects.
Single ply used to be more expensive than hot tar. But the rise in oil prices (the basic component of tar) has steadily increased the price of hot tar roofing. Single ply is now about the same cost as hot tar – because it uses plastics and other non-oil related chemicals, the oil industry has very little effect on its price. So – what used to be cost prohibitive is now very accessible… in some cases, single ply is actually less expensive.
I am not a salesman for single ply roofing. I am simply a happy roofing contractor with some experience in the field writing this article to shed some light on an exciting advance that in a very short time will be over your head!
Tommy Scherer has been in the roofing industry for decades and his company, T & G Roofing, has over thirty years of experience in the industry.

Look Up, It’s “Green”: Single Ply Roofing For A Better Environment
If you are in the market for a flat roof, there is good news. The top technology available is both more affordable and better for the environment than roofing techniques of the past.
A “Single Ply” roof is white and has a reflective surface. This new kind of material offers many benefits to your pocketbook and helps to dramatically conserve energy in your home.
A roof that lasts longer and reduces energy costs means less money spent on maintenance and cooling. In addition removing old roofs can be avoided with this light weight replacement of older, heavier roofs. This means less garbage in our landfills equaling less energy and money to deal with tons trash.
In the past, flat roofs have been constructed with many layers of hot tar with layers of paper in between. The tar has many toxic chemicals and is very harmful to the atmosphere. It also is extremely messy and unsafe for workers – often causing painful burns.
Hot tar no longer makes sense as a choice for your flat roof. Why use hot tar, when the roofing industry has come up with a superior solution that lasts longer, produces no harmful fumes, is recyclable and has a surface that reflects the sun (saving on energy bills)?
For a truly “green” roof, there is even a flat roofing option that acts like a garden. Trees, bushes and grass are planted on top of the single ply roofing material. This live roof helps to retain water, purify the air and is aesthetically pleasing. These roofs can really help to beautify previously drab-looking buildings and homes.
Many roofing businesses still specialize in hot tar and will therefore recommend it for your flat roof. Be sure to compare their offer with the offer of a company who specializes in single ply. It will be hard to miss why the advantages of single ply make it the top choice for those in the “know”.

Hot Tar Roofing… Bye Bye!
You probably know little to nothing about hot tar roofing, however most folks are interested in advancements so I’m writing this article to enlighten you to one in the flat roofing industry.
Hot tar has been around for a very long time. It can be traced back as far as 1189 when King Richard of England found its unique properties an excellent way to punish and torture men! He invented “tar and feathering”! Well isn’t that “Special” After some centuries, however, hot tar was put to a more productive use when it was learned that after cooling the tar hardened and became an excellent waterproofing agent. Its usage on rooftops began in the late 1800s and has continued to do so to this day.
It’s funny that a technology conceived in the 1800s has not been dramatically improved on? You’d be hard pressed to find another field of endeavor that has remained as stagnant as the hot tar roofing industry. They’ve obviously improved on the materials and formulas over the years but the basic technique and raw material have stayed the same.
As we all know change is all too often met with resistance. This resistance is fueled by people who stand to lose if change occurs. In the case of hot tar it would be the men in the hot tar industry including contractors who sell hot tar roofing for a living. But as the video cassette gave way to the DVD and the internet replaced a multitude of things so will hot tar be a fading memory like the dial up telephone or rabbit ears sitting on an old black and white T.V.
“Single Ply” roofing will be the wave of the immediate future in dealing with flat roofs. This material is basically a marked improvement on the old hot tar ways. Single ply material is based on developments in plastics and the field of chemistry. These chemical techniques have resulted in sheets of material that on a roof can last half a century in some cases. It is recyclable, has high reflectivity for dramatic energy savings, is very safe to install, is 10 times as light and in many cases costs about the same to install as a hot tar roof.
Most larger corporations across theU.S.(Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart etc..) made the switch to single ply some years ago but this change has gone under the radar to middle classAmericaand also to most apartment and commercial property owners.
If you remember when the internet first came out it was laughed at until more people got involved in it and understood it. So it is with “Single Ply” roofing. Not as dramatic as the Internet but nevertheless a giant leap for mankind in keeping water off of our heads, and money in your pocket!
